교회의 악폐를 잘 알고 있던 위클리프는 수도회 내의 타락, 교황의 세금 징수, 성변화(聖變化) 교리(미사에서 사용되는 빵과 포도주가 문자적으로 예수 그리스도의 몸과 피로 변한다는 주장), 고해, 교회의 세속일 관여 등을 반박하는 글을 쓰고 설교를 하였습니다.
